Dedicated Cancer Care Floor

At UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital

A care provider and patient. The opening of the 11th floor of UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital Pavilion A marks the next step in UK HealthCare’s mission to provide patients with the latest advances in cancer care in an environment carefully designed to promote healing.

The new UK Markey Cancer Center floor includes the Darley Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, a 32-bed unit dedicated to bone marrow transplant and patients with blood cancers. This floor also houses the James F. and Gay G. Hardymon Patient Care Unit. Patient Care Unit, a 31-bed unit for medical and surgical oncology patients.

On the new Markey floor, we provide care for patients who have the most complex cancer conditions. The space is designed with patients and their families in mind, since hospital stays can last months at a time. The floor includes laundry facilities and a comforting family room for caregivers and families.

Patients on the 11th floor also have access to the following services and programs:

Experienced Nurses

Our nurses are oncology certified and have obtained the Oncology Nursing Society’s Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Provider training to administer chemotherapies. Our nurses and staff are here to assist oncology patients while in the hospital and also during the transition out of the hospital. UK HealthCare is part of an elite group of hospitals that has achieved Magnet status – the gold standard for nursing excellence. Out of nearly 6,000 healthcare organizations in the U.S., fewer than 7 percent have achieved Magnet status.

Designed for Safe, High-Quality Care

The Markey floor, like all floors in Pavilion A, is designed to provide the safest, most efficient care for patients. The floor is designed to position nurses at a patient’s bedside and reduce the time spent away from patient care. Each patient room is equipped with a nurse work station right outside the door. Important diagnostic testing and other equipment are located directly on the Markey Cancer Center floor. This means patients who require radiology services can receive it near their hospital room, which minimizes wait times and prevents patients from having to move around to different areas of the hospital. This floor also features a barcode medication system, which improves patient safety by minimizing the potential for medication errors.

Cancer Care in Pavilion A

All patient rooms in Pavilion A are private and have the same size and design, improving staff efficiency and promoting safety. Each room is nearly 300 square feet, creating a comfortable environment for patients and visitors and making sure we can accommodate any health care technology that becomes available in the future. Wall-mounted flat-screen televisions are in every room on the Markey Cancer Center floor. The TVs will display important health information, including Get Well Network programming, and will help doctors and nurses clearly explain to patients what their care plan is every day. For visitors, rooms also include a work desk with wireless Internet access and a built-in sleeper sofa for overnight stays. Large windows provide natural light and outdoor views.

A Healing Environment

Many local artists and donors have generously supported UK HealthCare and the Markey Cancer Center, providing art and features to create a healing environment. Waiting areas feature artwork aimed at creating a soothing and relaxing environment. Bright, airy waiting rooms are comfortably furnished to provide a relaxed, welcoming environment for visitors.
