Weight Management Program
Have you struggled to lose weight on your own? Maybe you started an exercise program or tried several new diets but didn’t have any success losing weight or keeping it off.
The Weight Management Program at the UK Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center can help you adopt healthy lifestyle changes and lose weight. We have alternatives to surgery for weight loss, such as medication and nutrition assessments.
Why choose the UK Barnstable Brown Weight Loss Clinic?
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss. What works for someone else might not work for you, and it can be hard to figure out on your own what does work. We’re here to help with science-based treatments to ensure a safe and effective approach to weight loss.
It’s important to realize that sustainable weight loss is a long-term goal. We'll discover why you gain weight and guide you toward healthy, gradual changes instead of quick fixes or extreme diets.
Our program offers:
- Comprehensive weight loss management: We’ll look at the whole you with an approach that may include nutrition, physical activity, behavior modification and medication.
- Personalized care: We customize your weight loss program to fit your unique needs, preferences and overall health and get you the best results.
Who is eligible?
Anyone with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or higher is eligible for this program. You don’t need to have diabetes or prediabetes to join, and you don’t need a referral from your doctor.
What to expect
Your first appointment will take at least two hours. At your meeting, your weight management provider will:
- Conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your weight, diet history and physical activity
- Review any medical conditions associated with obesity
- Review your labs
- Order blood work if needed
Your schedule for follow-up visits will depend on your specific needs. If you take weight loss medication, you’ll have follow-ups every month for three months. We’ll check your weight and blood pressure to see how you’re responding to medication and adjust plans if needed.
Follow-up visits with a dietitian are scheduled with Diabetes Education Services at the UK Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center. There is a $50 fee for each one-hour appointment.
The cost of your visit will depend on your insurance. Most insurance doesn’t cover weight loss. We may be able to bill your insurance based on other health conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure.
You may have heard about the high cost and shortages of new weight-loss drugs. There are other medications for weight loss that might work for you. These medications are covered by many insurance plans.
