About

Crystal Totten, MD, is a general surgeon in the Division of Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery at UK HealthCare and holds an appointment as an assistant professor of surgery in the UK College of Medicine. She is actively involved in performing both laparoscopic and robotic procedures and has special interests in swallowing disorders, surgical endoscopy, hiatal hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction. Totten works to customize each patient’s procedure based on their needs and can manage abdominal wall hernias using open, laparoscopic and robotic approaches.

After receiving her medical degree and completing training in general surgery at the University of South Florida, Totten went on to complete a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction at UK in 2016. She returned to UK as a faculty member in the fall of 2018.

Totten is well published in the areas of cost and outcomes for hernia repair as well as the effects of medication alterations to collagen deposition following hernia repair. She is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American and Gastrointestinal Surgery, the American Hernia Society and the Association for Academic Surgery.

      The priority of the resident and doctor was all about telling me I have to quit smoking and lose 40 pounds to have hernia surgery. I understand about healing issues but I heal fast and well. That is what the focus was at this appointment.quit smoking and lose 40 pounds, lower a1c then I will see you in 6 months. A waste of my time

      He came in and did a complete exam. I had a large bruise on my stomach which he did not address. When the doctor came in she asked to see how my incision had healed although. I am sure she had been told. She immediately asked about the bruise. It was from falling.
