What makes emergency room nurses so special, according to our leaders

Landon Jones, MD

Today, October 9, is National Emergency Nurse’s Day, a day to honor the hard work, dedication and selfless devotion of emergency nurses. UK HealthCare’s Chandler Emergency Department is the region’s only Level 1 trauma center for adults, and the Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center is the only dedicated children’s emergency center in the state – and the only one serving Central and Eastern Kentucky.

We asked our leaders to share what makes our emergency room nurses so special:

Dr. Scottie B. Day, Kentucky Children's Hospital Physician-in-Chief

“While no one wants for their child to end up in the ER, the family-friendly environment our nurses provide to our patient families in the Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Department can make an extremely stressful situation a bit more bearable. When caregivers observe how our second-to-none nurses treat their child with love and respect and champion for their absolute best possible care, they know that they aren’t alone in this situation and that they made the right choice for their child’s care.”

Dr. Landon A. Jones, Medical Director, Pediatric Emergency Medicine

“One of the greatest strengths of our pediatric emergency department here at the Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center is our nursing team. The nursing staff is fantastic, caring, interactive and a joy to be around.”

Dr. Katelyn A. Yackey

“Every day, the UK Peds ED nursing team takes fantastic care of not only the children, but also the parents, doctors and each other. They are a true team of compassionate men and women dedicated to serving children and families going through difficult and sometimes frightening moments. They not only help heal, but also comfort, encourage, cheer and console. To work with them is an honor, and I am grateful for them always.”
