Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Don’t let shortness of breath keep you from living your best life.

Breathing issues can be terrifying, but the pulmonary rehabilitation experts at UK HealthCare are here to help calm your fears. Through a personalized, multidisciplinary program that includes education, exercise and breathing retraining, you’ll learn the skills you need to slow the progression of symptoms and more confidently live with lung disease.

While pulmonary rehabilitation won’t cure your lung disease, it can help you reduce shortness of breath, which, in turn, may also help reduce breathing-related anxiety and depression. You may also notice that the skills you learn make it easier to exercise and perform daily activities. As a result, you may be able to regain or maintain your independence.

Pulmonary Rehab Can Offer Life-Changing Benefits For People With COPD or Similar Disorders

How does pulmonary rehabilitation work?

Pulmonary rehabilitation is designed for anyone who has limited lung function due to a range of lung diseases and disorders, including:

  • Bronchiectasis
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Emphysema
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Lung cancer and lung cancer surgery
  • Lung volume reduction surgery before and after lung transplantation
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Sarcoidosis

The UK Pulmonary Rehabilitation team includes physical and respiratory therapists, an exercise physiologist, and a nurse.  Pulmonary rehab experts will teach you more about your medications — including drug action, side effects, inhaler use and self-care techniques — as well as oxygen therapy.  Our team will work with you on breathing retraining and strategies for managing breathing problems. They will develop an individualized activity plan in conjunction with a pulmonologist that is tailored to your needs, and you’ll be supervised and monitored as you build endurance and muscle strength.

Most importantly, you’ll gain confidence. People with chronic lung diseases are more prone than the general population to depression, anxiety and other emotional problems, and our experts are here to help you deal with those issues. We also offer strategies for tobacco cessation programs and support groups to help along the way.

Most health insurance companies generally cover pulmonary rehabilitation. UK HealthCare can assist in determining your coverage.
