I recognize that total weight carried adds extra work for the heart, and it being a cardiology clinic, weight is a thing to be discussed. However, I can't help but feel that the repeated use of the phrase "calories in, calories out" shows a gross lack of understanding of how weight actually works. I do not feel my provider is adequately educated in nutrition; aware of the fact that BMI is a flawed metric; up-to-date on weight-related research in regards to metabolism and set-points; aware or concerned that due to a long history of medical trauma centering on weight, a patient might have a panic attack or easting disorder flare-up when discussions of weight are treated so reductively during an office visit; or that their own internalization of societal beauty standards does not mean that it's ok to discuss a patient's body with people not on the patient's healthcare team, even if they view the changes in the patient's body as positive.
