Liver transplants increase in 2006
UK HealthCare performed a record number of liver transplants in the past year. Under the guidance of Dr. Dinesh Ranjan, director of liver and pancreas transplantation and chief of the transplant section, total liver transplant surgeries increased 23.25 percent in 2006 over the previous year.
“UK has assumed the leading position in liver and pancreas transplant centers in Kentucky. We are recognized regionally and nationally for aggressive utilization of donor resources and waiting times,” said Ranjan.
Patient referrals from physicians in the state of Kentucky and bordering states also increased by 14.4 percent over last year, with more than one patient a day being referred for liver transplant evaluation to the UK Transplant Clinic.
The liver transplant section at UK has four liver and kidney/pancreas transplant surgeons who are available 24/7 via UK-MD’s for referring physicians. Four full-time liver transplant nurse coordinators manage our liver transplant clinic and are also on call 24/7 for all pre- and post-transplant patients via a special paging system. Rapid evaluations of referred patients, also know as “Fast Tracks,” where patients are admitted to the UK hospital to complete all diagnostics for quick entry on the national waiting list for liver transplantation are done whenever necessary, usually several patients are listed and transplanted each month through this system.
We also have a full complement of gastroenterologists, nephrologists, pharmacists, social workers and financial counselors who work to enhance the health and well-being of our transplant patients.
As we head into 2007, we look forward to expanding further outward to serve the needs of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and surrounding areas.
UK HealthCare offers CMEs to Kentucky physician organizations and groups
The UK HealthCare Transplant Center offers CME hours to physician groups throughout the state. In addition to providing presentations on liver, kidney and kidney/pancreas transplant surgery, and the care of the post transplant patient, our physicians can also speak on topics such as portal hypertension, hepatocellular carcinoma and other areas related to liver and kidney disease.
CME presentations can be done during local hospital quarterly meetings, meetings of area medical societies, or meetings of cooperative groups of medical practices. To find out more about this service through the UK liver transplant center, please contact the outreach nurse coordinator, Lori Adams, at 859-323-6585 or 1-888-808-3212 or via e-mail at ladam3@email.uky.edu.
