Transplant Center expanding to meet state’s needs for patient care
The mandate for the University of Kentucky to become a Top 20 institution extends to UK HealthCare’s transplant program. We are meeting those goals by working to cover the needs of referring physicians and patients in all areas of the state.
UK HealthCare has always been a significant and consistent provider of high-quality care to the people of Central and Eastern Kentucky. The Transplant Section of the Department of Surgery at UK is now forming partnerships with medical entities in both Western and Northern Kentucky to offer comprehensive liver, kidney, and pancreas care in the areas of transplantation and surgery.
As our affiliations grow and networks expand, we will continue to work with physicians outside of Central Kentucky to help care for patients during their most critical periods, returning them home to local doctors for follow up care and annual tests.
Announcements of future locations for transplant assessment will be forthcoming. Any comments or suggestions can be directed to:

Fast-track evaluations
The UK HealthCare Transplant Center has a program in place to assist area physicians with an avenue for rapid evaluation of patients with liver disease when time is of the essence.
In-hospital fast-track evaluations for liver transplantation or liver surgery are completed within 48 hours.
Our evaluations are thorough and complete and include cardiac stress tests, CT studies, ultrasound, radiology, labs, dental, family/social and financial counseling. We work closely with our hepatologists, nephrologists and other specialists to determine any additional needs the patient may have.
A patient coming into fast-track evaluation is assigned a nurse to oversee testing. A transplant nurse coordinator will follow the patient from the beginning of treatment throughout their life.
With our fast-track program, it is possible for the patient to come in for evaluation one week and be placed on the national transplant list the following Monday.
Direct-admit fast-track evaluations are used for patients presenting with high MELD scores, usually above 18.
If you have a patient with liver disease that needs a timely evaluation, please contact one of our surgeons through our clinic at 859-323-4661 or toll free at 1-888-808-3212.
