2006 U.S. Transplant Games
LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 15, 2006) − The University of Kentucky Transplant Center is a sponsor of the National Kidney Foundation U.S. Transplant Games 2006, which will be held in Louisville June 16-21. The Olympic-style competition, held every two years in a different city, shows that organ transplant recipients can lead healthy, active lives.
Attendance is expected to exceed 7,000, including Team Kentucky with 60 members. Heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas recipients will compete for medals in swimming, golf, track and field, tennis, bowling and basketball.
In addition to competition among transplant recipients from 50 states, the Games will feature workshops for donor families and educational programs for professionals involved in transplantation. A 5K Donor Awareness Road Race, open to the community, will be held on Saturday, June 17, in downtown Louisville. Opening Ceremonies will be held at Freedom Hall Saturday evening. The National Donor Recognition Ceremony will be held at the Palace Theater in Louisville, Sunday, June 18.
George Lopez, star of the ABC sitcom, "The George Lopez Show," received a kidney from his wife, Ann, in April 2005. The two are now spokespeople for the National Kidney Foundation. George Lopez will compete in the golf event, and Ann will be keynote speaker at the Living Donor Recognition Ceremony, Monday, June 19, at the Galt House.
