Harrodsburg Man is UK Hospital's 100th Liver Transplant Patient
LEXINGTON, KY (March 8, 2000)—Freddie Warner, 58, of Harrodsburg, is the University of Kentucky Hospital’s 100th liver transplant patient. Warner, who suffers from hepatitis, received his new liver March 6 during a six-hour surgery. He had been on UK Hospital’s waiting list since November 1999.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Dinesh Ranjan, liver transplant surgeon and director of UK’s liver transplant program, and the transplant team.
"Although this surgery was technically challenging, it went smoothly," said Ranjan. "Mr. Warner is recovering well. In fact, he is already out of intensive care and is in a regular room. His condition is good."
UK Hospital established its liver transplant program in 1995. Central and Eastern Kentucky’s first patient to receive a liver transplant on July 11, 1995, was a 32-year-old Lexington man.
Currently, there are 31 patients awaiting liver transplants at UK Hospital. There are 63 people on Kentucky's waiting list for a liver transplant and 14,647 waiting in the United States.
UK’s liver transplant program is recognized nationally. UK’s survival rates are in excess of 90 percent, which exceeds the national standards.
