Whether visiting UK HealthCare or passing through the area, Kentuckians are taking note of several new signs of progress:
- Parking changes: The hospital’s former parking garage has been taken down to make way for the new UK Chandler Hospital. Several floors in the hospital’s new garage opened in November and all 1,600 parking spots will be available in March.
- New hospital infrastructure: A new fence lines the perimeter of the hospital under construction where crews are preparing the infrastructure.
- Utility work: You will notice changes to some of the utility poles around our campus. A main power feed that primarily runs through the building site is being relocated to Cooper Drive and Woodland Avenue. Sixty-five percent of the lines being relocated as part of this project will be underground.
Helpful information:
- From S. Limestone, the new garage is accessed by turning onto Transcript Avenue. See map> (220 Kb PDF)
- Shuttles depart from the A level of the new garage every three to five minutes, with one route taking parkers to the hospital emergency department and front loop and another route serving Kentucky Clinic. The shuttles, which are wheelchair accessible, sit low to the ground, providing easy access to guests unable to use stairs.
- An ambassador is stationed in the parking garage from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week and at the entrances to the hospital and Kentucky Clinic to answer questions and help guests access the shuttles.
- The garage’s basement, first and second levels opened initially and all remaining floors will open in March. With all floors open, the garage offers about 1,600 parking spaces, more than double the size of the former parking garage.

Building new hospital pavilion
- The former hospital parking garage has been torn down to allow for construction of the new pavilion at UK Chandler Hospital.
- The hospital’s new Emergency Department is scheduled to open in late summer 2010.
- Other areas of the hospital will be open in 2011.
- The new hospital will provide state-of-the-art space for advanced subspecialty care and a warm, comfortable environment for patients and their families.
- Upon completion of the new pavilion at UK Chandler Hospital, an enclosed walkway will be built above S. Limestone, connecting the garage to the hospital.
- Vehicles, similar to golf carts, will be available via the walkway. Shuttles will continue to provide door-to-door service to major medical center locations.

Under construction: New UK College of Pharmacy, Student health service
In addition to the hospital, two new buildings are currently under construction.
Combined with the new UK Chandler Hospital, the new UK College of Pharmacy and University Health Service will help form the beginning of the Commonwealth’s medical campus of future – a 21st century academic medical campus that is prepared to meet the health care needs of all Kentuckians.

UK College of Pharmacy
The new $120 million, 286,000 square foot UK College of Pharmacy is set to open in 2010 and will be the first academic building completed in UK’s medical campus of the future. The construction site is on the west side of S. Limestone, next to the UK Biomedical Biological Sciences Research Building.
The new pharmacy building will increase research and laboratory space by 75 percent, teaching and classroom areas by 80 percent and common areas including study areas and food services by 325 percent.
The UK College of Pharmacy construction site can be viewed at any time via a Web cam located on top of the Virginia Avenue parking structure. To see the progress, go to the UK HealthCare Construction Cameras page.
The UK College of Pharmacy, ranked among the top 10 pharmacy programs in the nation by U.S.News & World Report, enrolls 490 doctor of pharmacy students, 90 percent of whom are Kentucky residents. The new facility will enable the college to continue to expand its programs to educate more Kentucky pharmacists as well as more pharmaceutical scientists.

University Health Service
The University Health Service (UHS), a health care facility for UK students, will move into its new building this summer.
The new facility is located adjacent to Kentucky Clinic and the UK Charles T. Wethington Jr. building. With 72,000 square feet and four floors, it will offer more than five times the amount of space available in the current UHS location. In this building students will receive primary care, gynecological care, mental health care, and health education services.
In addition to caring for UK students, UHS also provides screenings and immunizations required for medical center employees and workers compensation care for injured UK employees.
