March 2007: Construction to Begin on Emergency Department Entrance
View the PDF version of this article (437kb PDF)
If you visit UK Chandler Hospital this spring, you will see construction under way near the Emergency Department (ED). The construction
will not impact traffic accessing the ED from Limestone. We are
building a new entrance to the ED that will allow the first phase of the new hospital construction to begin. The new ED entrance will offer additional amenities to our patients and visitors. An information desk and triage area will greet entering patients. The new entrance will extend from the current ED to the UK Linda and Jack Gill building. (The canopy currently on the south side of the Gill building will be removed to make way for the new entrance.) Construction will begin this spring and is planned to be complete in late summer.
In the new hospital, the ED will be expanded in a new location (footprint the size of a football field). It will include a separate children’s entrance and distinct children’s Emergency Department. And, it will provide easy, interior access to the main hospital.

Accessing the Gill Heart Institute and Center for Advanced Surgery
The new ED entrance is to be constructed where the Gill building’s current valet parking exists. As a result, starting May 7, 2007, patients with appointments at the Gill Heart Institute and the Center for Advanced Surgery will access the Gill building by arriving at the main entrance of the UK Chandler Hospital, accessible from Hospital Drive.
Temporary Closure of Hospital Drive in April
In order for construction to begin on utilities needed for the new hospital, Hospital Drive near the VA Medical Center will be closed to through traffic for a period of six to eight weeks beginning in early April. The map below shows the portion that will be closed. This closure will not prevent traffic on Limestone from using Hospital Drive to reach UK Chandler Hospital or its parking garage. While closed, traffic should access the VA Medical Center from University Drive. At the end of the six- to eight-week period, traffic flow will be reopened using an alternate street adjacent to the College of Agriculture greenhouses. Construction fences will be erected around various parts of the new hospital site in March.
