UK Brain and Body Radiosurgery Program

UK Healthcare is excited to announce the development of the Brain and Body Radiosurgery Program, which combines two of the most modern technologies available for superior, non-invasive cancer treatment: Gamma Knife^® brain radiosurgery and the TomoTherapy Hi-Art^® treatment system. These technologies enable most patients to be treated on an outpatient basis with no sedation and little to no discomfort. Most are able to return to the same level of activity they’re used to within a day.

What is the Brain and Body Radiosurgery Program?

Gamma Knife brain radiosurgery has been offered at UK since 1991. At the time, it was only the seventh Gamma Knife in the United States. Today there are more than 100 Gamma Knife programs nationwide, although UK still has the only Gamma Knife in Kentucky. Its non-invasive (no surgery) method has offered new hope to many patients with inoperable neurological disorders.

Since its implementation, UK specialists have used the Gamma Knife to treat more than 2,000 patients without a single mortality. Currently, UK is in the top 10 percent of Gamma Knife radiosurgery programs worldwide . And with our recent upgrade to the Gamma Knife^® Perfexion^TM UK HealthCare looks to continue the trend of staying up-to-date on the most innovative treatments commercially available.

Treating Tumors of the Body: TomoTherapy^®
The new coordinated program also includes the acquisition of the TomoTherapy^® Hi-Art^® treatment system, a technology that treats selected tumors in the body, such as inoperable lung cancers, kidney and liver tumors, spinal metastases, and tumors in difficult-to-treat areas.

TomoTherapy is one of the most advanced and versatile radiation therapy systems commercially available. Conventional radiation therapy machines deliver a wide beam of radiation from only a few angles. The Tomotherapy treatment system uses its unique CT scanner design to verify patient and target position on a daily basis and deliver radiation continuously from all angles around the patient. More angles and more precise modulation result in dose distributions that conform to tumors like never before, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
