Hirschsprung’s disease is the result of the large intestine missing special nerve cells that make muscles push. Without these nerve cells, stool blocks the intestine and may lead to life-threatening infections. Hirschsprung’s develops in children before they are born and symptoms usually show up at a very young age. Newborns may not have their first bowel movement when they should; older children suffer from severe constipation or diarrhea. This disease can be treated surgically by removing the diseased section of the intestine. Most children go on to lead normal lives after surgery. Pediatric surgeons at Kentucky Children’s Hospital are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of Hirschsprung’s disease.

Specialists of UK HealthCare Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine are among the first in the country to perform the remarkable new Birmingham Hip® Resurfacing (BHR) System, a bone-conserving approach that preserves more of the natural bone structures and stability than traditional joint replacement. With the potential to last longer than traditional implants, the BHR implant is intended for patients suffering from hip pain due to osteoarthritis, dysplasia or avascular necrosis, and for whom total hip replacement may not be appropriate. It is ideal for patients under age 60 who live active lifestyles.

Many health issues are connected. As your risk of coronary heart disease increases, your risk of stroke may increase as well. Fortunately, you can control a number of risk factors for heart attack and stroke. Your physical activity, response to stress and tobacco use influence your overall health and may reduce your risk for other illnesses.

Deep brain stimulation is a surgical treatment option for movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease symptoms such as tremor, stiffness and slowed movement. The procedure places an electrode, a fine wire coated in plastic, deep in the brain. A battery-operated device is implanted under the skin, connected to the electrode in the brain by a wire under the skin of the neck and scalp. An additional, external device allows the patient to control electrical stimulation targeted to the brain areas that control movement, blocking abnormal nerve signals that cause Parkinson’s symptoms.

Every day you make small choices that have an important impact on your risk for developing cancer. Deciding what to eat, how much daily exercise to perform, and whether to drink alcohol or use tobacco products are all examples of daily opportunities you have to take control of your health. Healthy decisions help prevent a number of other diseases too, including hypertension, adult-onset diabetes and stroke. In addition to preventing future illness, exercise and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables help you feel better, reach a healthy weight and increase your energy level.

Muscle weakness, numbness, spasms and pain can be diagnosed with electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). These tests determine if the problem involves nerves, muscles, the spinal cord or brain and serve as the first step to effective treatment for nerve and neuromuscular disorders. EMGs measure the electrical activity of muscles and NCSs measure the time muscles take to respond to signals that travel along nerves. The UK HealthCare team of experts is able to diagnose and treat a number of neuromuscular disorders.

Whether you rely on over-the-counter medications, vitamins or alternative medicine, it’s important to know how drugs interact with one another and your daily diet. Telling your health care provider about all the medicines you take is the first step to avoiding a potentially dangerous mix. Knowing why you need each medicine, asking questions and following the prescription as directed are other important steps to staying healthy. Medication errors can be harmful, but they can be prevented with a little planning.
