Pediatric Anesthesiology Fact Sheet

Pediatric anesthesiologists are physicians who specialize in the management of acutely ill children, premature infants and children with trauma. The physicians who make up this specialty group at Kentucky Children’s Hospital are board-certified anesthesiologists with additional training and experience in the management of these children.
In addition to providing anesthesia services in the operating room, pediatric anesthesiologists are experts in the management of sedation for nonsurgical procedures. Many medical tests require a quiet, still patient in order to obtain accurate results, and these specialists make that possible.
Pediatric anesthesiologists provide consultation services for neonatologists, pediatric intensivists and pediatric emergency medicine specialists. They help create an environment that enables surgeons and other medical staff to complete their work under the safest conditions. Providing pain and symptom control for the smallest of patients requires specialized knowledge and techniques.
Kentucky Children’s Hospital’s pediatric anesthesiologists are trained to interact with
surgeons and pediatricians from all specialty and subspecialty areas in the management of young
patients. Treating children takes a special brand of physician – one with the expertise and experience to navigate medically complex cases coupled with the compassionate care skills needed to put sick children and their parents at ease. Children and families in unfamiliar settings require special abilities on the part of the medical staff, including consideration of the developmental level of the child. All pediatric anesthesiologists see themselves as advocates for children.
High-risk and critically ill children often require more expertise than may be available outside of Kentucky Children’s Hospital. While many anesthesiologists in the community provide excellent care, Kentucky Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in the eastern half of the state that has pediatric anesthesiologists who are specially trained and offer a specialized resource to successfully manage the most challenging cases. The entire medical team at Kentucky Children’s Hospital is dedicated to providing world-class care for all children, giving them the best opportunity to grow and develop to their fullest potential..
