The Digestive Health Program specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases affecting the digestive system.

Since its foundation nearly 40 years ago, the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition has distinguished itself as a highly ranked specialty within the Department of Internal Medicine. It provides state-of-the-art medical care to patients with gastrointestinal diseases, liver diseases and nutritional problems in a multidisciplinary environment.
The Digestive Health Program specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases affecting the digestive system. A collaborative team of gastroenterologists and surgeons provides the most advanced treatments to patients.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program
This program specializes in ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, two chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. A local support group has also been formed to assist patients with these diseases.
Endoscopy Center
The Endoscopy Center is a 7,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility that provides an advanced environment for endoscopy and training. Nearly 9,000 endoscopic procedures are performed annually at both UK Chandler Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Hospital. Regularly performed procedures include colonoscopy, upper digestive endoscopy, sclerotherapy and endoscopic ultrasound.
Hepatology
The hepatology expertise of UK HealthCare’s gastroenterology physicians is supported by the university’s liver transplant program. Specialized procedures related to hepatology including therapeutic biliary endoscopy and laparoscopy are also offered.
Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition
This division offers assessment and treatment for pediatric and adolescent patients with gastrointestinal and liver disease. Diagnostic services include consultation and follow-up evaluation using state-of-the-art diagnostic and procedural services.
Nutrition
The nutrition support team is directed jointly by surgery and gastroenterology at UK Chandler Hospital and by gastroenterology at the VA Hospital. Daily rounds are made with a nurse, nutritionist and pharmacist who are dedicated to the team.
