Kentucky Children’s Hospital Patient Chosen to Represent Kentucky During Champions Across America Tour
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 27, 2007) - Today, UK HealthCare’s Kentucky Children’s Hospital hosted a send-off party for Hunter Blair, who was chosen to represent Kentucky and Kentucky Children’s Hospital during the Champions Across America tour.
Hunter, 8, is the grandson of Donna Huzl and Bob Blair of Nicholasville. He will travel with his family on behalf of Kentucky with the Children’s Miracle Network Champions Across America tour. The week-long tour will travel to the United States Capitol in Washington D.C. and Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
Champions Across America honors extraordinary children who have overcome severe medical challenges. They are respected for their bravery and persistence.
Hunter was born with a severe heart defect as well as both kidney and digestive problems. At age 4, Hunter experienced his first open heart surgery and the doctors told his family to be ready to buy him new tennis shoes. Fortunately, the doctors were right. Hunter’s surgery went well and he has now grown to be a very healthy young boy.
Hunter’s grandmother described her grandson’s stay at Kentucky Children’s Hospital as “an experience that we will never forget. The best word to describe Kentucky Children’s Hospital is 'awesome' and I don’t know what we would have done without them,” Huzl said. “There was never a day that we were not comforted, explained and told what consequences might arrive either good or bad.”
The young ambassadors chosen to travel on the Champions Across America tour hope to share the message that their lives are better because of the tremendous work of their children’s hospital.
“Hunter was chosen because he was an extraordinary patient and child,” stated Loralyn Cecil, manager of community relations at Kentucky Children’s Hospital. “He was a child that needed a lot of care. He is a very inspiring young man.”
