V GlossaryA | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L | MN | O | P | Q | R | S | T | U | V | W | X | Y | Z vacuum aspiration - Procedure in which a suction tube attached to a vacuum pump is inserted through the vagina into the uterus to loosen and remove its contents. vacuum extraction - Procedure used to ease delivery by applying a metal or plastic cup to the baby's scalp and using suction to pull the baby gradually out of the vagina. vaginal hysterectomy - Procedure in which the uterus is removed through the vaginal opening. vaginitis - Irritation, redness, or swelling of the vaginal tissues, usually resulting from a bacterial infection. vaginosis, bacterial - Very common vaginal infection characterized by symptoms such as increased vaginal discharge or itching, burning, or redness in the genital area. vagotomy - An operation to cut the vagus nerve. This causes the stomach to make less acid. vagus nerve - The nerve in the stomach that controls the making of stomach acid. valve - A fold in the lining of an organ that prevents fluid from flowing backward. valvuloplasty - Plastic surgery to repair a valve, especially a heart valve. vasovagal - a transient vascular and neurogenic reactin marked by pallor, nausea, sweating, bradycardia and rapid fall in arterial blood pressure which can result in loss of consciousness. varices - Stretched veins such as those that form in the esophagus from cirrhosis. varicose vein - An abnormally dilated vein. varicose veins - Enlarged, curving veins just beneath the skin, usually in the legs. VATER - A word made from the first letters of a group of birth defects. It is used when all of these birth defects affect the same child. The birth defects are: A constellation of vertebral defects, anal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula with oesophageal atresia, and renal and radial anomalies; associated with Fanconi's anaemia. vascular - Pertaining to blood vessels. vasodepressors - A medication that raises blood pressure. vasodilator - A medication that dilates or widens the opening in a blood vessel. vein - A blood vessel that carries blood from the body back into the heart. ventricle - One of the two lower chambers of the heart. ventricular fibrillation - A condition in which the ventricles contract in rapid and unsynchronized rhythms and cannot pump blood into the body. ventricular tachycardia - A condition in which the ventricles cause a very fast heartbeat. vertigo - Dizziness. vestibular - Pertaining to or toward a vestibule. In dental anatomy, used to refer to the tooth surface directed toward the vestibule of the mouth. villi - The tiny, fingerlike projections on the surface of the small intestine that help absorb nutrients. viral hepatitis - Hepatitis caused by a virus. Five different viruses (A, B, C, D, and E) most commonly cause this form of hepatitis. Other rare viruses may also cause hepatitis. See hepatitis. vitreous humor - The clear gelatinous substance that fills the eyeball between the retina and the lens. volvulus - A twisting of the stomach or large intestine. May be caused by the stomach being in the wrong position, a foreign substance, or abnormal joining of one part of the stomach or intestine to another. Volvulus can lead to blockage, perforation, peritonitis, and poor blood flow. vomiting - The release of stomach contents through the mouth. vulva - External, visible part of the female genital area. |
