Construction affects access to Established in 1985, Markey Cancer Center utilizes the resources of 28 departments, eight colleges and 150 faculty members throughout UK to further the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer. Markey Cancer Center ComplexMarkey Cancer Center is located north of UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. The center is integrated with UK Hospital for patient care services and with the UK College of Medicine for academic/education, research and service programs. The center encompasses four individual facilities containing a total of approximately 250,000 square feet of space, although its programs reach well beyond the UK campus, extending throughout Kentucky and across twelve states of Appalachia and the Mid-South. The physical facilities of the center include the following:
What's inside: Patient care and cancer treatment facilities. Programs/Uses: Inpatient and outpatient cancer care services, administrative office, radiation medicine, ovarian cancer screening, bone marrow transplant, and cancer-related research labs. Features: This triangular setting is used successfully to meet the needs of various cancer-related programs. It is one of three facilities that encompass the Markey Cancer Center. The other two are the Davis-Mills Magnetic Resonance Imaging Spectroscopy Center and the Combs Research Building.
What's inside: 25 primary research laboratories dedicated to cancer research, including core facilities for high field NMR, DNA sequencing, protein sequencing, peptide synthesis and oligonucleotide synthesis. Features: The typical research lab module is about 300 square feet excluding office space.
The office tower of the MRISC Building is integrated with the Cancer Facility for Women and provides clinical evaluation space and chemotherapy / infusion services, plus the headquarters for the Women's Health Initiative. What's inside: MRI patient services. Programs/Uses: The MRISC is an interdisciplinary center that promotes basic, applied, and clinical research in the biomedical sciences along with patient care in magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy. Features: Along with the MRI and spectroscopy equipment for patient care, about 30,000 square feet of space is devoted to research and development of biomedical applications in magnetic resonance.
The combined Cancer Facility for Women and MRISC tower constitute a composite Ambulatory Care Pavilion addressing the majority of outpatient needs for cancer care services. | ||||||||||
