Heart failure is the inability of a weakened heart to effectively pump blood throughout the body. It is the only cardiovascular disorder increasing in incidence and prevalence in the United States.
Causes of heart failure
- High blood pressure
- Heart defect from birth
- Coronary artery disease
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Past heart attack
- Excessive alcohol abuse
- Damaged heart valves
- Rheumatic fever and viral infections
- Family history of heart failure
Symptoms
Physical symptoms include: weight gain, shortness of breath, weakness or feeling of fatigue, frequent urination at night, irregular sleeping patterns, and a fast or irregular heartbeat. Heart failure can also lead to psychological symptoms, such as slow mental activity, depression or feelings of fear or frustration.
Treatment
The Gill Heart Institute offers a complete range of heart failure care services and clinical treatment programs. This program is directed by board-certified cardiologists that are experienced in the latest advances in the evaluation and treatment of the disease. They evaluate patients and develop individualized plans of care to meet each patient's specific needs. Also, we believe that the mental aspect of heart failure is as important as the physical symptoms, which is why we sponsor a support group to discuss the latest advances and issues on the disease.
