Pediatric Training Level 3
The PL-3 trainee assumes greater clinical responsibilities and is allotted more time for in-depth study and research. The senior resident is expected to assume more responsibility for junior housestaff and medical student teaching and present noon conferences.
Two months are spent as a supervisory resident in the pediatric clinic. During this period, residents see some patients in Twilight Clinic. Two months are spent as a supervisory resident on the pediatric ward. One month rotations as a supervisory resident occur in the newborn nursery and pediatric intensive care unit. An additional month is spent in the NICU/transitional nursery.
An additional month in community pediatrics encompasses experiences at the Family Care Center and clinics based at an elementary and middle school in Lexington. This rotation gives residents exposure to an integrated service model for health care emphasizing medical, dental, mental, and social health and education.
A required subspecialty elective rotation includes outpatient experiences in allergy, dermatology, high risk neonatal follow-up, childhood musculoskeletal (including rheumatologic) disorders, and hematology-oncology and permits some additional time to be spent in other outpatient subspecialty experiences as desired by the resident.
Four months of elective time is spent in the subspecialties, community pediatrics, or other experiences.
Night call for PL-3 residents averages every sixth to seventh night throughout the year.
