Division of Hematology-Oncology
UK Medical Center serves
as a tertiary care center for children from Central and Eastern
Kentucky with a wide variety of hematologic and oncologic problems.
The division has six full-time faculty members who are board-certified
or board-eligible in pediatric hematology-oncology. The division
also includes nurses certified by the Association of Pediatric
Oncology Nurses, a dedicated pharmacist, and a social worker. Multidisciplinary
care is assured by close collaboration with pediatric surgeons,
including
pediatric orthopedic and neurosurgery services, pediatric radiology,
and other pediatric subspecialists.
The division has an active clinical service, providing diagnostic
and treatment services to approximately 45 new pediatric oncology
patients per year. The University of Kentucky is a full member
of the Children’s Oncology Group (C.O.G.) and ranks among
the top 20% of all C.O.G. institutions in clinical research activity.
With such an active service, with the availability of all national
pediatric oncology treatment plans, and with experienced and caring
attending physicians, patients and their families are assured they
can get the best care available for pediatric cancers without having
to leave their local community.
A new $750,000 outpatient clinic for pediatric hematology-oncology
opened in the summer of 2004. This beautiful state-of-the-art facility
boasts a comfortable new chemotherapy infusion area with a wide-screen
TV and video games, an on-site pharmacy, an on-site laboratory for
automated blood counts, and a sedation facility that allows the administration
of deep sedation for children undergoing painful procedures such
as bone marrow aspirations and lumbar punctures. Approximately 3,000
outpatient visits per year are recorded in the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology
Clinic.
The division is also the home of the University of Kentucky Hemophilia
Treatment Center (UKHTC), which is staffed by a full-time nurse practitioner
and a full-time nurse manager. The UKHTC offers care management and
pharmacy management services to patients with bleeding disorders
in central and eastern Kentucky.
The Division also has active laboratory research programs in drug
development and melanoma biology.
Appointments for the University of Kentucky Pediatric Hematology-Oncology
Clinic are available daily in the Kentucky Clinic, Department of
