Division of Critical Care Pediatrics
The Division of Critical Care Pediatrics includes
four pediatric intensivists. The pediatric intensive care unit cares for
children ages newborn to 16 years who have a life-threatening acute illness
or organ system failure requiring artificial life support. Our new, state-of-the-art
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a multidisciplinary unit for children
with a wide variety of medical, general surgical, cardiovascular surgical,
and neurosurgical problems, as well as traumatic injuries. Last year there
were over 600 admissions to the PICU.
Residents rotate through the PICU for one month during each of their
PL-2 and PL-3 years. The role of the pediatric resident is to learn
to manage acute illness, resuscitation and life support techniques,
to perform invasive procedures, and to learn to interact with families
during times of immense emotional stress. Residents are involved actively
with both medical and surgical patients in the PICU. Therapeutic and
diagnostic modalities utilized in the PICU include bedside pulmonary
function tests, high-frequency ventilation, ECMO, hemofiltration, and
other invasive and non-invasive monitoring techniques.
