Cardiology
UK Pediatric Cardiology
has full-time faculty members. In addition, a patient care coordinator
and an administrative assistant help make this busy clinical service function
efficiently.
About 2,900 outpatients, both children and adults, with congenital
heart disease are seen yearly at Kentucky Clinic, and about 800 are
seen at 12 regional heart clinics held in rural health departments.
Full ranges of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities are available.
Over 100 children undergo heart surgery annually.
Each resident has a one-month rotation on cardiology. During that rotation,
the resident participates in the outpatient clinics, learns to read
ECGs and becomes familiar with echocardiography, cardiac catheterization,
and post-operative care.
Each faculty member has ongoing basic or clinical research interests.
Current areas of investigation include the structural and functional
maturation of cardiovascular systems, the use of echocardiography in
the assessment of left ventricular function and pulmonary hypertension,
fetal echocardiography, interventional cardiology and the genetic transmission
of congenital heart disease. Residents are encouraged to participate
in research projects should they choose to do so.
