The Ethics of Donation After Cardiac Death
Rebecca B. Yarrison, PhD
Assistant Professor, UK Program for Bioethics

Abstract:

Donation after cardiac death (DCD) has become a widespread practice in the last decade but remains controversial. In this presentation, Dr. Yarrison will explore the ethical challenges DCD presents by exploring such questions as “Are DCD donors really dead?” and “Can conflicts of commitment between the best interests of the donor and the best interests of the recipient be managed ethically?” Possible solutions to those ethical challenges will also be discussed.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss problems related to the dead-donor rule in DCD.
  2. Discuss possible problems related to procurement procedures in DCD.
  3. Assess potential solutions to these problems.
