UK HealthCare Arts in HealthCare Program

The UK HealthCare Arts in HealthCare Program will feature art in all its forms throughout our hospitals and clinics.

• The visual arts will provide interest in public areas, on patient floors and in the emergency departments.
• The performing arts will be organized under the Lucille Caudill Little Performing Arts in HealthCare Program and will bring performances by renowned artists and UK School of Music faculty and students to a state-of-the-art, 300-seat auditorium, and to patients' bedsides. Live performances will be broadcast to patient rooms and partner hospitals. The Teresa Garbulinska Performance Series will bring noted classical musicians to play with local artists in a premier performance each year.
• This program will also offer, through the School of Music, the only Music Therapy graduate degree program in Kentucky. It will provide music therapy for our patients and will feature other performing arts as well as interactive art opportunities for patients, families and staff. 

Chapel art glass designed by British artist John Reyntiens will depict springtime in Kentucky, a theme selected by philanthropist Myra Leigh Tobin for its beauty and sense of hope.

The program will highlight artists with a Kentucky connection, as well as reach out more broadly to work with artists nationally and internationally. Kentucky folk art is a central piece of the collection. Our goal is a collection that is uniquely Kentucky while also achieving wide recognition.

Several key pieces for the major public spaces have been awarded as a result of international competitions. These commissions, as well as the entire art program, are funded with philanthropic gifts. A volunteer art committee comprised of community leaders, faculty, artists and collectors serves as an advisory group for the program and participates in the selection of art and the development of programs and facilities. 

The program is designed to create a healing environment; growing research indicates that the arts improve and mitigate many aspects of health care. As a member of the Society for Arts and HealthCare, UK HealthCare has relied on the findings and successes of other art programs across the country to create an art program for the people of Kentucky that is at the forefront of this movement.

Gingko, a 38-foot-tall stainless steel and mesh sculpture has been commissioned for the atrium skylight. Mixed-media sculpture artist Warren Seelig is creating this iconic piece.
