VP for Health Care Operations Named

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 26, 2008) − Dr. Richard P. Lofgren has been named vice president for health care operations and chief clinical officer at the University of Kentucky.
The appointment, subject to approval by the UK Board of Trustees, was made by Dr. Michael Karpf, UK executive vice president for health affairs. Lofgren currently is UK HealthCare's chief medical officer.
In his new role, Lofgren will be responsible for day to day operations and integration of clinical services as well as coordinating services between UK HealthCare and its regional partners. He will have joint responsibility with UK College of Medicine Dean Jay Perman for the operations of ambulatory services to ensure a smooth continuum of care between inpatient and outpatient care.
"UK HealthCare is growing quickly and maturing as an organization," Karpf said. "It truly is an exciting place to be at this point in time and Dr. Lofgren's new role will help meet our goals to provide seamless care between outpatient and inpatient facilities, as well as between hospitals when patients are transferred to UK HealthCare. We work closely with our regional partners to ensure patients receive care in their local community for as long as possible, but when they need to come to Lexington to UK, Dr. Lofgren will work to facilitate a smooth transition for those patients. Dr. Lofgren's outstanding accomplishments have prepared him with the expertise that will move us forward as an organization and meet the health care needs of this state."
Lofgren came to UK in 2004 from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he was senior associate dean for clinical affairs, chief medical officer of the Medical College Physicians, and professor of medicine. There he was responsible for developing and leading the clinical group practice and managing the practice's infrastructure, which included clinic operations, billing and collection service, managed care, business development, business support services, clinical informatics, quality improvement programs, customer service and marketing.
