UK HealthCare celebrated the groundbreaking of the new UK Chandler Hospital with four days of events for employees, patients, patrons and dignitaries.
Groundbreaking Ceremony, May 30, 2007
The Groundbreaking ceremony was the best attended in UK history. More than 350 guests attended the event, including Governor Ernie Fletcher, Mayor Jim Newberry and members of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.

Groundbreaking
Held at an exclusive trackside viewing room at Keeneland Racetrack, Dr. Karpf and UK HealthCare
invited more than 100 guests who had contributed to the success of the Groundbreaking celebration. The event culminated in a toast delivered by Dr. Karpf.
Academic Symposium, May 31, 2007
More than 450 people attended the UK HealthCare Academic Symposium, which brought together medical professionals, university staff and students. UK HealthCare offered information to all guests with display tables representing its various departments.

The event featured lectures by Dr. David M. Lawrence, Alumnus, UK College of Medicine, UK Graduate and Chairman Emeritus Kaiser Permanente – "Integrating Health Care in the 21st Century: What Stays? What Goes? What Changes???"; Dr. Jordan J. Cohen, Director, the Washington Advisory Group President Emeritus, Association of Medical Colleges – "Preparing Physicians for the 21st Century"; and Dr. Sue T. Hegyvary, Alumnus, UK College of Nursing, Dean Emeritus, University of Washington College of Nursing – "Health and Health Systems in Global Context: a 21st Century Perspective."
Faculty and Staff Groundbreaking Celebration, June 1, 2007
UK HealthCare hosted a lunch and dinner celebration to involve all faculty and staff in the groundbreaking event. Hospital administrators were on hand to answer questions regarding the project and UK HealthCare employees were invited to sign a banner commemorating the event. More than 4,000 people enjoyed the lunch celebration, while another 1,000 employees came to the dinner event.

The four-day celebration culminated with a Groundbreaking Gala at Lexington's prestigious Donamire Farm.
More than 1,000 people attended the gala, which included entertainment by Johnny Mathis. More than $350,000 was raised through this event for the Art in HealthCare program, which will place art throughout the new hospital.
UK HealthCare would like to thank the many volunteers who generously gave their time to make the Groundbreaking celebration a success and the thousands of people who came out to support the future of UK HealthCare and the health of Kentucky citizens.
Many individual gifts and proceeds from the June 2007 Hospital Groundbreaking Gala are funding Seelig's sculpture and other artwork in the hospital.
