Cancer Types & Teams

The complexity of cancer involves many different branches of medicine. The Markey Cancer Center has developed a variety of specialized multidisciplinary teams to evaluate and treat the disease, which means that physicians and nurses from multiple specialties work together with patients to develop the best treatment plan for their particular circumstances. This approach gives the patient and family a coordinated "second opinion," yields a variety of options for a comprehensive treatment plan and moves patients into active treatment more quickly.

Cancer Types

More than 100 different types of cancer exist and each type of cancer must be treated differently at different stages of disease. The Markey Cancer Center's expert teams are committed to developing new and more advanced ways to fight cancer and utilizing breakthrough technology to maintain and improve patients' quality of life.

Brain Cancer Team
Treating cancers of the brain and spinal cord.

Treating male and female forms of breast cancer.

Genitourinary Cancer Team
Treating cancers of the kidney, prostate and bladder.

Treating cancers of the lips, tongue, mouth, pharynx, larynx, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal system

Hematologic Cancer Team
Treating leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, blood and marrow transplants and hematology.

Lung / Thoracic Cancer Team
Treating cancers of the lungs, esophagus and chest.

Pediatric Oncology Cancer Team
Treating leukemia, lymphoma and other childhood cancers.

Chemotherapy

chemo suite Chemotherapy suites are housed in the Whitney Hendrickson Building (directions) of the Markey Cancer Center. We provide outpatient chemotherapy services seven days a week, with 23 chemotherapy chairs operating Monday through Friday and 9 chemotherapy chairs Saturday and Sunday. Each chemotherapy bay is furnished with its own television with DVD or VCR connections. Our pharmacists and nurses are experts in cancer care, specializing in chemotherapy administration.

The Markey outpatient nursing staff were the 2006 recipients of the UK HealthCare Magnet Nursing Award, an honor that recognizes their dedication to providing outstanding patient care.

Radiation Medicine

The UK HealthCare Department of Radiation Medicine offers patients the most advanced cancer care in one convenient, supportive and comprehensive center. We provide a variety of advanced treatment options and specialized clinics for outpatient care, as well as social and emotional support. In addition, the department's ongoing commitment to clinical research allows many patients to take advantage of groundbreaking investigative therapies.
