Membership in the Markey Cancer Center Research Community
The purpose of defining membership in the Markey Cancer Center is to identify and appropriately support a collaborative community of investigators dedicated to advancement of the overall mission of the center: To reduce the morbidity and mortality of cancer.
MCC Members have access to cancer center research space, have priority use of shared resources at discounted prices, are eligible for MCC funding for clinical, translational and basic research projects, and have access to cancer center advocacy for promotion, tenure, Wethington awards and outside or institutional funding requests.
Faculty in this category are engaged as Principal Investigators or Co-Investigators in cancer-related research, whether aligned with one of the established MCC-designated research programs or working in developing cancer research related areas. Full Members must hold full-time faculty appointments at the University of Kentucky. For purposes of NCI-Designation, full membership is the defining characterization.
Faculty or staff in this category are considered to be important participants in the overall mission of the cancer center, although they do not meet the criteria for full membership. Such individuals may be scientists in their early stages of growth at the research associate or instructor level, just beginning a career in cancer research. Others may have full-time, voluntary status as clinical faculty, participating by entering patients on clinical trials and/or facilitating the gathering of biospecimens. Other faculty or staff who are not engaged directly in research but who fulfill an essential supporting role in some leadership capacity may be associate members: e.g., director of the Clinical Oncology Research enterprise; director of the Cancer Information Service; etc.
