Markey Cancer Center Grants & FundingThe Markey Cancer Center (MCC) has a broad mission to reduce the morbidity and mortality of cancer through a comprehensive program of cancer education, research, patient care and community outreach. In support of the research component of this mission, the center provides internal grant support opportunities to faculty who are "Members" Click here for more information about membership. Funding opportunities include basic, translational, clinical, epidemiologic and other population-based research involving any aspect of cancer prevention, early detection, prognosis, treatment and/or supportive care/symptom management. Special consideration will be given to funding interactive/ collaborative projects with a translational research emphasis in designated program areas, and to multi-user/shared equipment and core research facilities. Correlative science studies associated with novel clinical trials are also of particular interest. The overarching intent for funding through the Markey Cancer Center is to cultivate novel projects and ideas that show promise toward advancing the understanding of cancer and toward the development of new models and modes of intervention in malignant processes. Applications for funding may be submitted at any time and for any amount, although one year support for $25,000 - 50,000 is most appropriate. The purpose of this funding is to make faculty more competitive for extramural funding sources, not to substitute for such funding or to be provided in lieu of an appropriate start-up package. Thus, actual funding amounts and funding periods will be limited and will be heavily dependent on the compelling promise and novelty of the proposed studies, scientific merit, collaborations, and available Center resources. (See "Young Investigator Funding Opportunities" below for more restricted funding options available through the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant.) This program will not support faculty salaries, graduate assistantships, graduate tuition and fees, routine office equipment, laptop computers or other standard items expected to be provided by the investigator's department. The application, in 12 point type, is to contain the following:
Alternate application format: Researchers who have applied to an external sponsor but were not funded may request funds to generate additional data that will make the proposal more compelling and competitive for resubmission. In this case, the researcher can forward the original application, the critique, and a brief (two pages) response to reviewer comments for consideration. The response must articulate how the support from this grant would be used to address the external grant critique. Applications will be reviewed by at least three peer faculty members who will report their recommendations to the MCC Executive Committee. The final decision will be the responsibility of the director. Generally reviews will take no more than 30 days with notification of application status relayed to the applicant shortly thereafter. Written reviewer comments will be provided on request. Further information about these opportunities may be obtained by contacting Lew Kelly at 859-323-5713 (lakell2@email.uky.edu.) Young Investigator Funding OpportunitiesYoung investigators (Assistant Professor level without sources of extramural funding other than career development awards) may be eligible to apply for American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grants. The ACS IRG funding mechanism provides up to $30,000 for one year to obtain proof of principle/proof of concept pilot data that will serve as an appropriate underpinning for efforts to obtain longer term extramural funding. Applications are accepted twice annually, March 15 and October 15, and are reviewed by an internal IRG Review Committee. A minimum of 3 applications can be funded annually through this mechanism.
