UK Gill Heart Institute Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
What is cardiac rehabilitation?
Cardiac rehabilitation is a comprehensive program that provides medical evaluation, supervised exercise, risk factor modification, medication optimization and education to people who have suffered a cardiac event. Studies have concluded that cardiac rehabilitation offers a 20-25 percent survival benefit to participants and lowers the risk of another cardiac event.

Phase I is completed while the person is still in the hospital.
Phase II generally begins one to three weeks following the person’s discharge from the hospital. The sessions can last for 12 to 18 weeks, with the person attending two to three sessions per week. These sessions are monitored by a physician and are tailored to fit the individual’s needs.
Phase III is a maintenance program that does not involve physician supervision. This typically continues after completion of Phase II.
Who should undergo cardiac rehabilitation?
There are six cardiac events that qualify for cardiac rehabilitation. These events are:
A percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as angioplasty
Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
Stable angina
Bypass surgery
Heart valve surgery
Heart transplant
If a person has had any of these, his or her physician may prescribe cardiac rehabilitation.
How does it help?
Cardiac rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary program that helps the patient change his or her lifestyle while strengthening both the body and the mind. By learning about ways to prevent cardiovascular disease while simultaneously strengthening the body and heart, a person can recover from a cardiac event and help prevent future events.
Cardiac rehabilitation is based on a team approach. Our team includes a cardiologist, a cardiac nurse specialist, an exercise physiologist, a nutritionist and a rehabilitation assistant. Working with the team, each patient will learn how to lower his or her own risk of future cardiac events and become more educated about heart disease while increasing physical activity levels and improving quality of life.
